Lamine Yamal was the star of Barcelona’s win over Elche last night as he racked up a goal and virtually provided the assist for Marcus Rashford’s goal.

His strike at the Estadio Martinez Valero, in fact, helped him equal Diego Maradona’s goal record at Barcelona – all while he is still just 18 years of age.

More importantly, it was his third consecutive game for Barcelona with a goal, which only helps cement the fact that his attacking output this season has been significantly superior to what it was last term.

Numbers speak loud

Yamal’s goal past Inaki Pena last night was his ninth goal in La Liga this season – the same number of goals he scored in the entirety of the previous campaign.

Last season, the youngster made 35 league appearances for Barcelona, in which he produced nine goals – averaging around 0.25 goals per game.

He scored against Athletic Club, Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Espanyol, Granada twice against Real Madrid, and scored a brace against Granada.

This season, however, his nine goals have come in just 18 matches, given that he missed some games through injury, taking his average to 0.5 goals per game.

What is clear, thus, is that this season is witnessing Yamal’s most lethal version yet. Despite all the noise around his fitness and performances, the numbers prove that he has doubled his productivity from last season.

“I’m really happy with Lamine Yamal’s recent situation: He’s not only focused on attack, but on defence as well. It’s really great to see, and we want to have him at this level,” Flick said about Yamal after the game.

Needless to say, the manager will hope Yamal can keep up the same level and even improve further on his fitness as the season progresses, for Barcelona need the teenager to be at his best version if they are to compete on all fronts.
