Chivas failed to reach the playoffs following a play-in defeat to rivals Atlas, ultimately capping off a catastrophic season for Los Rojiblancos. Manager Fernando Gago left the club halfway through the season and the club were guided by youth-team coach Arturo Ortega for the remainder of the campaign. Facing Santos Laguna on the opening day, the club has appointed Óscar García Junyent who will be joining the list of managerial debutants this weekend as the club searches for a first league title since 2017.
The final game of the week will see Pumas welcome Necaxa to the Estadio Universitario. Pumas finished the regular season in fourth, but suffered an early playoff exit after a goalmouth second leg to Monterrey. As for the weekend visitors, who were on course for a play-in position, but ten games without a win to end the regular season saw the side fall to 13th. Their last league win came in September, with a 2-0 over Pumas.
