West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess has commented over whether Jed Wallace can extend his future at the club under Tony Mowbray.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Since Tony Mowbray stepped into the West Brom hot-seat, the Baggies have had a mixed run of form as they look to hang onto a spot in the Championship's top six.
Albion kicked off the 61-year-old’s second spell in charge of the club with a 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough, before hammering relegation-threatened Portsmouth at The Hawthorns 5-1.
But last weekend Albion succumbed to another defeat on the road, suffering late heartbreak with a 2-1 defeat to second tier basement boys Plymouth Argyle.
The former Blackburn and Sunderland coach will be aiming to find some consistency to keep Albion in the mix for the top six come the end of the season and is still in need to find his best starting XI.
One player who has seen his West Brom future resurrected in the early stages under Mowbray is club captain Jed Wallace, with the former Millwall man starting the last two Championship games.
The 30-year-old netted his first second tier goal in the blue and white stripes since April 2024 in the domination over Pompey, leading the line in the absence of both Josh Maja and Daryl Dike.
With Albion’s plan of who will lead the line in the short-term future up in the air, a case could be made for Wallace to keep utilising the role, given Nigerian international Josh Maja is out until the spring, while Daryl Dike is set to be eased back into action after suffering such a serious Achilles injury.
Turning from an outcast back into a first team regular because of a change of coach, West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess has offered his thoughts over whether Wallace has a future at B71 beyond this term.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess believes Wallace has a part to play in the immediate future, but stresses he could return to the bench when other attacking options return to the fold.
Burgess told FLW: “The future was looking quite bleak originally for Jed Wallace until Tony Mowbray arrived, with him having as many starts since Mowbray took over as he did in the four months prior, so he’ll be relishing that.
“He got a goal against Portsmouth and led the line fairly well linking the play. Against Plymouth he didn’t contribute too much, but he did step up and play a part in the goal to assist (Jayson) Molumby, so you’d think he would have more of a role to play than many would have foreseen before the transfer window given he now seems to be above Karlan Grant in the pecking order.”
Burgess added: “I think it might be important that Will Lankshear gets more minutes to see what he can contribute to the team and, while we wait for Josh Maja and Daryl Dike to return, the striker position seems to be up for grabs between those two, but the thinking from Mowbray for now will be to play Wallace as a false nine like he did with Amad Diallo at Sunderland.
“While the Albion attack is so hit by injuries, that’s the extent of where Wallace’s minutes will come from, so when numbers eventually come back into the team, I think he’ll return to being a bit-part player as he was playing previously.”
There’s no doubt in the next few weeks Jed Wallace will continue to get regular game-time for West Brom, with Will Lankshear needing to settle into the club, while Devante Cole has failed to impress since his arrival from Barnsley last summer.
Wallace will have to do all he can to impress in the upcoming games to stay in Mowbray’s plans, as competition for places set to heat up when the likes of Josh Maja and Daryl Dike make their long-awaited returns.
