Lisandro Martinez injury diagnosis confirmed by Man Utd | OneFootball

Manchester United have confirmed Lisandro Martinez suffered a crucial ligament injury during the team's 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Martinez was stretchered off in the second half of United's defeat and broke into tears as he left the field, sparking fears of a significant injury which were soon amplified by reports in Argentina claiming the centre-back had suffered a dreaded anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

While United's statement did not confirm the exact nature of Martinez's cruciate ligament injury, The Athletic stress it is believed to be an ACL issue, which is likely to keep the Argentina international out until late in 2025.

"Manchester United can confirm that Lisandro Martinez suffered an injury to his cruciate ligament in Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace," a statement read.

"Everyone at Manchester United wishes Lisandro Martinez strength for a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.

"Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the appropriate course of treatment and the timescale for his rehabilitation."

With Jonny Evans also sidelined through injury, Amorim's options for his three-man defence are now Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, Victor Lindelof and January signing Ayden Heaven.

Martinez's injury immediately sparked calls from fans for the recently returned Luke Shaw to fill in as a left-sided centre-back, but the England international has since suffered a setback in his recovery from injury and will return to the sidelines.
