Likely inspired by Macclesfield's heroics against Crystal Palace over the weekend, it was the visitor's who almost struck first at Anfield.

Inside the opening minute, a header from Davis Keillor-Dunn very nearly caught Liverpool out, but the Barnsley star was denied only by the woodwork.

The shaky start continued for Arne Slot's side as Joe Gomez was caught out, before Nathanael Ogbeta mishit a cross and sent his effort wide.

With 10 minutes gone on the clock, Liverpool were able to restore some order as Dominik Szoboszlai fired the Reds in front with a stunning effort from distance.

A little after the 30-minute mark, Liverpool extended their lead as Jeremie Frimpong cut inside from the right and struck another effort from distance into the back of the net.

It wasn't all plain sailing for the Reds, however, as a mistake from Szoboszlai before half-time resulted in Adam Phillips scoring against his former club, having spent eight years in Liverpool's academy.

Liverpool came close to scoring a third early in the second-half as Virgil van Dijk had an effort tipped onto the bar by Barnsley goalkeeper Murphy Cooper, but the Reds then got away with one as the referee waved away a penalty appeal for the visitors.

The Reds did eventually put the tie to bed with just under 10 minutes left to play as substitute Florian Wirtz found the net from the edge of the box after connecting with a Hugo Ekitike backheel.

Wirtz then repaid the favour to his teammate deep in stoppage time as he made a run in behind and squared it across goal for Ekitike to roll the ball into the net for Liverpool's fourth and final goal of the night.

Slot's side will now face Premier League side Brighton at Anfield in the fourth round of the competition.
