Liverpool have completed the signing of defender Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennais.
The France Under-21 international has penned a long-term contract, with the move formally ratified on Wednesday. It marks the start of a significant defensive rebuild under Andoni Iraola.
The deal was actually struck back in February. Liverpool moved early for the 20-year-old, agreeing an initial £55m fee that could rise to £60m with add-ons.
That outlay makes him the second most expensive defender in the club’s history, behind only Virgil van Dijk.
Concerns over his fitness have eased. Jacquet suffered a season-ending shoulder injury shortly after the deal was agreed, cutting short his 2025-26 campaign.
He has since completed his rehabilitation and will be available for the full pre-season programme.
His pathway to Anfield has been steadily built. A product of the Rennes academy, Jacquet made 33 senior appearances for the club, 21 of them last term. He also gained valuable experience during a season-long loan at Clermont Foot.
The player could not hide his excitement. “For me it’s a big dream, it’s a big club,” Jacquet told the club’s official website.
“When I see the facilities, I can see myself there. I feel good here and I am very excited to get started.”
His arrival addresses a pressing need. Liverpool have lost Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid, leaving a gap Iraola must fill.
Jacquet will compete with Joe Gomez and the recovering Giovanni Leoni for minutes at centre-back.
His profile fits the club’s clear model. Liverpool have prioritised elite young talent in recent windows, with the average age of their signings sitting below 22. Pundits have even drawn early comparisons with Arsenal’s William Saliba.
The five-year deal, which runs until 2031 with the option of a further year, takes effect from July 1, with his squad number to be confirmed.
