Liverpool talent Jayden Danns has signed a new long-term contract with the club, before sealing a loan to Championship promotion-chasing Sunderland.

Danns is currently injured and will initially remain based at Liverpool's training ground until a period of rehab is complete, but is then set to finish the 2024/25 campaign with Sunderland. The problem is with his back that the Black Cats have confirmed was identified during a pre-transfer medical.

Sunderland sit fourth in the Championship standings, having set the pace until a win-less November, but are just three points off an automatic promotion place with a competitive goal difference.

The paperwork for 19-year-old Danns to join Sunderland was completed before Monday night's 11pm transfer deadline, although the deal wasn't announced until Tuesday lunchtime.

"This is my first loan move and a chance to prove myself, so I'm very appreciative of the opportunity and I'm grateful to the club for placing their faith in me," Danns told Sunderland's official website.

"I've done my research and the team is incredible, so this feels like the right step. I'm disappointed that I will be unable to do that straightaway, but I'm proud to have joined the club and I will work hard throughout this period to ensure I can return to action and play my part."

At Sunderland, he joins an exciting squad that includes the highly-rated Jobe Bellingham, younger brother of Jude, and 17-year-old forward Chris Rigg.

Danns has made nine first-team appearances for Liverpool to date, including coming off the bench during last season's triumphant Carabao Cup final at Wembley. He is the son of retired EFL journeyman midfielder Neil Danns, who most recently turned out for Robbie Savage's Macclesfield in the depths of regional non-league football beyond his 40th birthday.
