Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness revealed that Liverpool could move in for Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck next year. Wyness said,

“He’s proven to be the best defender so far this season in the Bundesliga. He looks to be a real talent and he’s the right age at 25. Look, there is no doubt Liverpool are working overtime right now trying to fix this defence. They’ve got to push the boat out in January.

“It doesn’t look as though it’s going to be Schlotterbeck now, but he could still be one of the targets, certainly. I do expect to see some serious movement in January from Liverpool, and they’re going to be spending where they probably hadn’t planned to because there’s some some cracks appearing. They’re going to have to get that defence shored up.”

The 25-year-old has made a decent start to this campaign as he has put in a string of impressive displays for the German club on the defensive end of the field. Schlotterbeck has made seven appearances for Borussia Dortmund this season across all fronts.

The German talent has been a rock at the back and deserves credit for making nine tackles, four blocks, eight interceptions and 23 clearances in the Bundesliga. He has even distributed the ball accurately from inside his half, based on his pass completion rate of 87.5% in the top tier of German football (stats via fbref.com).

Should Liverpool Boss Arne Slot Get Schlotterbeck On Board?

Schlotterbeck is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when required and can play his way out from the back.

Standing at 1.91m, the German sensation is a strong presence in the air as well. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League.

Schlotterbeck would add more bite and steel to Liverpool boss Arne Slot’s defence. He has what it takes to fight for regular first-team football at the Merseyside club.

At 25, Schlotterbeck has his peak years ahead of him, which makes him a decent choice for the Reds to consider next year. Therefore, Slot would be wise to go all out to get him on board this January or at the end of this season.
