Mixed team news for the Reds ahead of Premier League return as Alexander Isak looks to make debut
Liverpool should have Jeremie Frimpong back for Sunday’s trip to Burnley in the Premier League, but Arne Slot has confirmed that Curtis Jones will miss the game through injury.
Right-back Frimpong, a £29.5million summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen, scored on his debut for the Reds against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield last month and also started their first top-flight match of the season against Bournemouth, but missed subsequent wins over Newcastle and Arsenal with a hamstring issue.
The 24-year-old was left out of the Netherlands squad for World Cup qualifiers against Poland and Lithuania as a result, but posted pictures via his official social media channels on Thursday that showed him back in training at Liverpool.
Frimpong wrote alongside the images: “Back out there. Feels good, sooo good.”
Addressing the media on Friday ahead of Sunday’s return to Premier League action at newly-promoted Burnley, Liverpool boss Slot confirmed that Frimpong was among the non-international senior players that had been in training with the club’s Under-21 squad, with the rest of his first team due back to work on Friday.
He should be in contention for the trip to Turf Moor, though Jones will not be involved after the England midfielder picked up an unspecified knock after coming off the bench against Arsenal before the international break.
Otherwise Liverpool are expected to have a clean bill of health against Scott Parker’s side, with centre-back Ibrahima Konate having played every minute of France’s recent meetings with Ukraine and Iceland after his own injury scare suffered late against Arsenal.
New £125million signing Alexander Isak will hope to make his eagerly-anticipated debut in some capacity after appearing for the first time this season as a substitute for Sweden in Kosovo on Monday night, though Slot has warned fans that he is not ready to take on a full role yet.
Asked if his international players were returning free of injury, Slot said: “I think they are.
“We train for the first time today with them, with most of them - the non-internationals did train with the U21s this week already.
“Curtis Jones, of course, I don’t know if you knew, but he got injured in the last game, so he will not be available for the game against Burnley.
“The rest of them I think all came back without a problem - and that’s not always the situation.
“Especially not in the beginning of the season, where everybody comes from a different background going to the national team where they all of a sudden have to play two games in four or five days, which is always the biggest risk. In November, October or March they are much more used to that programme.
“We are happy they are fit and again compliment not only for the Swedish manager [Jon Dahl Tomasson] but also for the others because a few others like Ryan Gravenberch started one game [for the Netherlands] and not both of them.”
