Liverpool supporters were left puzzled after the club’s X account highlighted former striker Darwin Nunez, amid claims he is now a free agent and calls for Andoni Iraola to bring him back.

The 26-year-old is said to have mutually ended his Al-Hilal deal after the Saudi move last summer, with the arrival of Karim Benzema reportedly affecting his registration. Barcelona are monitoring him as a potential cost-effective successor to Robert Lewandowski, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Liverpool have reportedly been offered the chance to re-sign him without a fee as they assess options following a long-term injury to Hugo Ekitike. His pace, power and pressing are viewed as a stylistic fit for Iraola’s aggressive approach.

In his previous spell at Anfield he produced 40 goals and 26 assists in 143 games, and his work rate endeared him to parts of the Kop. A shot conversion a little over 11 percent underlined frustrations about his finishing.

The club post marked the four-year anniversary of Nunez joining, and its timing sparked confusion and excitement in equal measure. Some supporters read it as a hint and urged the club to bring him home, while others suspected it was a gauge of fan sentiment.

Chelsea and Newcastle United have also been linked, and Liverpool may need to move quickly if they want him. A free transfer for a player who cost £64m only a few years ago would be a striking twist to the summer.
