Liverpool have endured a tough time of it in the Premier League and Champions League so far this season, also crashing out of the League Cup. It is, in my opinion, entirely understandable why that might be the case, given the fact that this is a club that has been grieving the loss of a popular and important player.
The death of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva not only sent shockwaves through the world of football, it also hit the Reds’ pre-season preparations. As a result, there is a desire for some to see the club enter the transfer market in January, but what might that look like?

Personally, I am of the opinion that Fabrizio Romano is a spoofer, having notifications turned on for journalists with actual connections and largely just tweeting what they say moments after they’ve said it. Whether I like it or not, though, he is extremely popular online and many football fans take what he says as gospel. As a result, it is a lot harder to ignore him than I’d like, with even Liverpool supporters prone to follow him and act as if he’s some sort of all-knowing transfer guru, in spite of the way that he appeared to try to monetise the news around the passing of Diogo and André Silva.

One of the names that Romano is touting as being a possible Liverpool target is that of Rodrygo Silva de Goes, the Real Madrid player who is 24 and was also linked with the Reds in the summer. He is being seen as a possible replacement for Mohamed Salah, according to Romano, thanks to the fact that he is versatile and is also someone who is not necessarily at the top of Xabi Alonso’s list of players that he’s keen to keep around. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano pointed out that Chelsea and Arsenal have both been ruled out of pursuing Rodrygo, but Man City could still look to bring him in.

The Mo Salah situation is one that hangs over Liverpool, even though the player did enough before heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations to convince the manager to allow him to rejoin his teammates in the squad for the game against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Given he’s now 33, he won’t be a first choice for much longer for the Reds, which means that replacing him will be close to the top of the list of priorities for Richard Hughes and his backroom team. One of the names that will unquestionably be on their agenda is that of Antoine Semenyo, given the fact that he can play on both wings.
Although Semenyo is part of the Ghana national setup, they haven’t qualified for AFCON, making him immediately available to cover for Salah. There is also the situation that Semenyo is more of a natural winger, which will play into Liverpool’s hands in terms of the Reds seemingly moving towards a system that uses a more natural number nine.

There is little doubt that we are interested in him, but the truth of the matter is that Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are all keen on him, whilst he is reportedly an Arsenal fan, so signing him won’t be straightforward.

As the transfer window drew to a close in the summer, there was reportedly a deal in place for Liverpool to sign Marc Guehí from Crystal Palace. Although I personally am very much against signing the Palace captain on account of the fact that he has made what appear to be homophobic gestures in the past, there is no question that the club wanted him and we desperately need a defender.
Ibrahima Konaté’s form means that the Frenchman should have been dropped long before now, to say nothing of the issues around Joe Gomez’s fitness that have long been there for him.
I think the majority of us would love for Gomez to be available for selection all of the time, but the fact that he went off in the game against Brighton is a sign that the player simply can’t be relied upon to remain fit for any length of time.
Although Giovanni Leoni looked extremely promising, his anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered during the League Cup match against Southampton means that he isn’t someone that we can turn to right now, whilst also not knowing how he’ll be in the future. At least one centre-back is needed in January, with an argument that we should be looking for two.
