Jeremy Jacquet has quickly become one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe.
The 20-year-old has impressed for Rennes this campaign and, despite his age, has been the man touted to solve a number of team’s defensive issues.
Liverpool and Chelsea seem to be leading the race in England, but Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also in the hunt for the player.
According to a new report from TEAMtalk, Chelsea have now compromised in negotiations with Rennes and are willing to wait until the summer to sign the Frenchman.
Rennes are very reluctant to see their biggest talent leave mid-season, and so Chelsea’s willingness to wait for Jacquet could give them the upper hand.
Liverpool’s current situation may not allow them to wait until the summer to bring in some much-needed cover for Slot’s backline.
According to the report, a fee of over €60 million could test Rennes’ resolve in January, but time seems to be running out for a deal to be struck.
The Reds will no doubt still be in the hunt for defensive reinforcements in the summer as more than one addition is needed, but an expensive January move for Jacquet may be their best chance to secure the Frenchman with minimal competition.
Richard Hughes seemingly wanted to wait until the summer to once again attempt to bring Guehi to Merseyside, but that led to Liverpool missing out.
Waiting until the summer could prove costly, but Liverpool have left it extremely late to add to their backline mid-season.
