Reds boss delivers team news latest ahead of Premier League trip to the south coast
Arne Slot has revealed that Federico Chiesa has a chance to be fit for Liverpool’s clash with Bournemouth in the Premier League this weekend.
The Italian forward had been considered a major doubt for Saturday’s teatime trip to the Vitality Stadium after being a late withdrawal from the squad for the midweek Champions League meeting with Marseille.
Chiesa was initially named as a substitute for that 3-0 win in France, but did not end up being available as an option off the bench due to what was initially reported as him suffering a knock during the warm-up.
However, Slot later explained that the player had actually picked up an issue during training on the eve of the game and travelled with the squad anyway to undergo treatment and see if he could recover in time to feature in some capacity.
Chiesa was unable to be involved in the end, though he could yet return against Bournemouth as the resurgent Reds look to extend their 13-match unbeaten streak across all competitions.
“Federico wasn’t able to be on the bench on Wednesday,” Slot told reporters at his pre-match press conference on Friday. “There was a recovery session yesterday, so we have to wait and see today.
“It’s difficult for me to say whether he is available for Bournemouth. We don't expect him to be out for long, so it would be 50/50 maybe if he is available for tomorrow.”
Slot confirmed that Liverpool picked up no fresh injury concerns during a commanding victory over Marseille in which Mohamed Salah returned from Africa Cup of Nations duty to make his first club start since November, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo netting either side of an own goal forced by Jeremie Frimpong.
Liverpool remain without long-term injury absentees Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni, with Chiesa’s latest setback leaving them with only four senior outfield players on the bench on Wednesday night.
“For the rest, at this moment in time, no-one picked up a knock, no-one had a problem after the game, but sometimes when you start training again you can feel something,” Slot said.
“But I expect all the same players to be available for tomorrow and Calvin Ramsay is a player who is not available for the Champions League but will be available for the Premier League, so that’s another player to add.”
