Liverpool are reportedly in “pole position” to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window.

The Reds have been linked with the England defender as they look to strengthen their backline ahead of defending their Premier League title this coming season.

A new centre-back signing is required at Anfield following the departure of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, while Ibrahima Konate has entered the final year of his contract and could depart for nothing next summer.

Liverpool in ‘pole position’ to land Marc Guehi transfer

If the 25-year-old does decide to leave Selhurst Park this summer, then Liverpool will have a “clear run” at his signature, according to The Telegraph.

The Merseyside outfit, who have been “monitoring” his contract situation over the past year, are in “pole position” to land Guehi while their rivals pursue other targets.

Guehi has long been linked with a return to Chelsea, where he began his football career, but the Blues are “prioritising” their efforts elsewhere, even after Levi Colwill suffered an anterior ligament injury.

Newcastle almost signed the defender in a £70 deal last summer, but are “focusing on different positions” before the window closes. A new striker is a “priority” for Eddie Howe.

That said, The Times reported earlier this week that the Magpies intend to “revive their interest” in Guehi. They don’t want to spend more than £40m for the Palace star, but the Eagles are “still asking” for £50m.

Tottenham Hotspur are another club who have been linked with Guehi this summer, but their interest appears to have cooled. They are currently focused on finding a midfield replacement for the injured James Maddison.

Asked about the possibility of signing a new centre-back at his pre-match conference ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield against Palace, Liverpool boss Arne Slot said: “We have numerous options that can play there.

“But as I always say, it’s the same boring answer as with players that we may bring in or not; I am really happy with the players that we have and we have numerous players that can play in that position.”

Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who also has a year left on his contract, said that he and Guehi “have the same fate”.
