Despite their success in recent seasons, Liverpool now find themselves in a period of transition.
Arne Slot won the Premier League at the first time of asking last season, and the Dutchman was backed with a spend of over £400 million in the following summer, but his current squad is far from complete.
A deal has already been agreed that will see French starlet Jeremy Jacquet link up with the Reds ahead of next season, but more business needs to be done.
As well as signings, there will almost definitely be departures at Anfield, and the writing is on the wall for one of Liverpool’s stars.
Slot’s side once again fell to a disappointing defeat in Istanbul as they suffered their second 1-0 away loss of the season so Galatasaray on Tuesday night.
The Reds were poor across the board, but their midfield came under criticism for failing to gain any control over the game.
Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai all played the full duration, with Curtis Jones only an unused substitute.
Despite scoring and assisting in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Wolves on Friday night, Slot clearly felt that Jones wouldn’t have been able to impact a game that the Reds were chasing.
As well as being involved in two of the goals against Wolves, Jones boasted 100% passing accuracy.
For reference, out of Liverpool’s three midfielders on Tuesday only Gravenberch had a pass accuracy percentage of over 81%.
To make matters worse, Slot only used three of his five available substitutes in two of his three available windows, meaning he would have been able to bring Jones on at any point.
With plenty of interest reported and Jones about to enter the final 12 months of his current deal, it feels as though the writing is on the wall for the 25-year-old.
If Jones continues to be overlooked by Slot, there is little reason for the Scouser not to listen to proposals from other teams, and it seems likely that the Reds would accept a reasonable offer for their homegrown star this summer.
