Derby County are looking to seal a loan deal for former player Kaide Gordon from Liverpool.
According to The Athletic, the Rams are eyeing a temporary move for the winger who came through the club’s academy system.
Gordon has made a handful of appearances for Liverpool since joining in 2021, including receiving a debut in the Premier League in a 3-0 win over Brentford in January 2022.
However, he was not part of Arne Slot’s side during the Reds’ 4-2 win over Bournemouth last Friday night, indicating he is not part of the top flight team’s plans for the season ahead.
When asked if Gordon is good enough for John Eustace’s side, FLW’s Derby fan pundit Shaun Woodward claimed that his history with the club might be a decisive factor in whether this is a deal worth doing.
He believes that it is a gamble worth taking if no other winger signings can be made, even if he is uncertain whether the 20-year-old is ready to consistently play at this level.
“It’s a tricky one because I think if he hadn’t gone through the Derby ranks and pulled at the heart strings a little bit we’d already be saying he’s not good enough for Derby right now in his career,” Woodward told Football League World.
“However, the fact he did come through Derby’s ranks and we had to sell him when we didn’t want to, it kind of makes you feel like I’d wish you stayed and gone on to show what you can do for the club.
“So, in some ways, it’ll be lovely to see him come back to his natural home, really.
“And you never know, he might feel at home at Derby and we might get to see the best of him because he hasn’t really done anything for Norwich or Portsmouth.
“They didn’t see anything in him that made them want to sign him or renew his loan, so it’s a difficult one.
“Is he good enough for the Championship? We don’t know but, you never know, you come back to Derby, then he could flourish.
“Difficult thing for me is, we don’t have any wingers at the moment, so I can’t say he’s not what we need because we need wingers.
“And a winger that’s unproven and potentially could be hit or miss is still better than no wingers, so it might be a gamble worth taking, and hopefully he can settle and hit the ground running back where he started his career.
“I wouldn’t be sad to see him come in but, equally, if we sign someone more experienced I wouldn’t be bothered by that either.
“I think it’s a difficult one for the fact that he just grew up at Derby, so I’d be happy to see him come in.
“If he can help us that’s brilliant, because we are really lacking in that area.”
Derby lost both of their opening league games this season, leaving them 22nd in the table ahead of Friday night’s clash with Bristol City at Pride Park.
Gordon knows Derby well due to coming through the academy system, so that familiar surrounding could be what he needs in the Championship to get the best out of him.
Whatever the winger decides to do this summer, his priority should be getting regular game time.
If he is willing to play as a wing-back, then he could be the kind of attacking option out wide that the team lacks.
