Liverpool are looking to sign a world-class centre-back with Richard Hughes ready to step-up a move.
During the summer transfer window, the Reds missed out on Marc Guehi in a very disappointing fashion. But they weren't overly disappointed.

That's because they had signed Giovanni Leoni earlier on in the window, which meant they felt they had enough depth in the department.
Their conviction was highlighted by Leoni's debut. However, his injury on that brilliant debut has now once again exposed the club's depth.
Leoni is unlikely to play for Liverpool this season. He has suffered an ACL injury that will take time for him to recover from.
In the aftermath, Hughes could move to sign Guehi, but he's also looking to sign someone else.
The obvious solution would be the England international. Guehi is available on a free next summer which means the Reds could sign him for pennies in the January window.
But Hughes is a smart businessman and he's going to be exploring alternative options.
Among those options is a world-class Italian centre-back who could be the perfect successor to Virgil van Dijk's throne.
According to Calciomercato Liverpool could now enter the market for a centre-back in the January window.
Among the options listed by the Italian outlet is Bremer from Juventus, the aforementioned Guehi and Alessandro Bastoni.
The move for the Inter Milan defender is definitely the most enticing of the options. It would take a lot of money for the Reds to secure his services considering he is one of the best defenders in world football at the moment.
However, he'll only have two and a half years left on his deal by the time January comes around so Inter may consider a sale for the right price.
In terms of Bastoni. At 26-years-old, he will likely be considering his career and will have the incentive to win the biggest trophies on offer.
Something he could be guaranteed to be fighting for at Liverpool.
There's also the appeal of a small Italian contingent at the club with Leoni and Federico Chiesa.
From Liverpool's point of view, Bastoni is the perfect world-class replacement for the future eventuality of Virgil van Dijk leaving the club.
There aren't many centre-backs who could replace the Dutchman at Anfield but Bastoni is one of them, and for that reason Hughes may be ready to spend big on the Italian.
