Arne Slot and Liverpool are expecting to be boosted by the availability of Mohamed Salah for their FA Cup quarter-final tie against Manchester City.
The Egyptian superstar was absent from the Reds’ 2-1 Premier League defeat away to Brighton & Hove Albion before the March international break after a minor muscle injury sustained in the Champions League win over Galatasaray three days earlier.
Salah’s domestic form and importance to Liverpool has plateaued this season, managing just five Premier League goals in 22 appearances, whilst off-field tension emerged through a publicised fallout with Arne Slot in December that briefly threatened his place in the squad.
Since then, and ahead of the run-in of the ongoing season, both parties have agreed to cut Salah’s Anfield contract short a year early, allowing the 33-year-old club legend to leave as a free agent this June, with a move to the Saudi Pro League or MLS now the likely next step.
Before then, Liverpool have plenty to compete for and will certainly need the competitive experience of Salah to get them over the line, with a chase for a top-four finish in the Premier League, the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and the FA Cup all on the horizon.
Now, according to The Times’ Paul Joyce, Liverpool are hopeful Mohamed Salah will be fit for the club’s FA Cup quarter-final tie away at Manchester City on Saturday afternoon at the Etihad Stadium.
City’s post-March international break run-in is a relentless sprint across two competitions, beginning with the high-stakes clash against Liverpool, and followed by a daunting Premier League triple-header in April, travelling to Chelsea (April 12) before hosting Arsenal (April 19) and visiting Burnley (April 26).
With the Blues having been knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in March, the focus shifts entirely to domestic dominance, concluding in May with crucial trips to Everton and Bournemouth as well as home meetings with Brentford, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace.
The condensed schedule will certainly test the Manchester City squad’s depth to the limit as they look to add the FA Cup and another Premier League title to the Carabao Cup trophy they secured just before the break thanks to a 0-2 win over Arsenal at Wembley.
