Liverpool’s stand-off with Mohamed Salah eased on Friday, with the forward set to rejoin the squad for Brighton on Saturday at 16:00, yet the dispute remains unresolved.
The row began after the 3-3 draw at Leeds on 6 December, when the 33-year-old complained about three straight benchings. Arne Slot then left him out of Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League win at Inter.
Speaking to Betfair, Alan Shearer said Salah should apologise, adding he feared the Egyptian might never play for Liverpool again. Later, Slot declined to confirm if Salah would face Brighton, saying he would first speak to him.
By day’s end, Liverpool informally indicated Salah had met Slot and would be included against Brighton. That lifted hopes, before messages from the player’s camp suggested the rift was not fully healed.
After this weekend, Salah will join Egypt for the Africa Cup of Nations from 21 December to 18 January. During the tournament, agent Ramy Abbas Issa and Liverpool’s sporting leadership plan talks that could include a move to Saudi Arabia.
It is therefore possible today is the final match of his Liverpool career, which began in 2017 and brought a Champions League in 2019, two Premier League titles in 2020 and 2025, and 250 goals. No ceremony is planned, with his exit not agreed and Liverpool keen to project reluctance to sell to protect value. Whatever happens at Anfield, the saga is likely to continue in the coming weeks.
