Liverpool Doubts Grow After Frustrating Campaign

Liverpool’s season has drifted into uneasy territory and the atmosphere around Arne Slot is beginning to change. A year after succeeding Jürgen Klopp, the Dutchman is facing scrutiny as supporters wrestle with a campaign that has lacked momentum, consistency and conviction.

The frustration was evident at Anfield during the 1-1 draw with Chelsea, where sections of the crowd voiced their discontent. Liverpool remain on course for Champions League qualification, yet sitting 17 points behind Arsenal has sharpened the sense that this season has fallen well below expectations.

Former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino believes Liverpool’s hierarchy may soon have a difficult decision to make, and he has identified Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola as a serious contender should Slot’s position become vulnerable.

Speaking on the TalkSport Weekend Sports Breakfast, Cascarino said: “The booings are happening more regularly at Liverpool now. I want Arne Slot to get to the end of the season and then Liverpool to make a call.

“I’m concerned because it’s not good.”

Those comments reflect a growing uncertainty around Liverpool. While there is no indication an immediate managerial change is planned, modern football rarely allows instability to linger quietly, especially at clubs with Liverpool’s ambitions.

Iraola Reputation Continues to Rise

Iraola’s work at Bournemouth has transformed him from a respected coach into one of the most admired managers in English football. His side play with intensity, tactical bravery and relentless energy. More importantly, they continue to improve.

Bournemouth sit sixth in the Premier League and have spent large parts of the season competing for European places. That achievement has not gone unnoticed.

Cascarino believes Iraola is already preparing for a bigger opportunity.

Speaking about the Spaniard, he said: “He’s probably been offered something that’s better. It’s like when you’re a player. If you play brilliantly for a club at Bournemouth, like Semenyo or others, you get the vultures hanging over you and take you away to the bigger clubs.

“I’m sure he knows where he’s going.

“We’ve got Marco Silva in that position. We don’t quite know what the outcome is going to be. Obviously, Oliver Glasner as well at Crystal Palace.

“Don’t tell me these guys don’t know where they’re going.

“Jurgen Klopp, that announcement, when it came out he was leaving Liverpool. That was made in the November.

“It was kept on hold for four months before it came out. Seemingly no one knew. There obviously were a handful of people. But it’s no different.

“These guys, I would imagine, would know exactly where their next destination is.”

There is substance behind the speculation. Iraola’s football suits Liverpool’s identity. His teams press aggressively, move the ball quickly and attack with courage. Bournemouth have become one of the most difficult sides in the division to play against, despite operating with a fraction of Liverpool’s resources.

Richard Hughes Connection Adds Intrigue

One factor making the Iraola discussion impossible to ignore is his relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes.

Hughes played a major role in bringing Iraola to Bournemouth before leaving for Liverpool. That existing connection naturally fuels suggestions that the Spaniard could eventually move to Anfield.

Cascarino acknowledged that point directly.

“He brought him to Bournemouth and now he’s at Liverpool,” he explained.

“He did that negotiation. He was there. You have connections in football and people you deal with.

“He’d have dealt with the agent. He’d have worked with him. Now, I’m putting two and two and making five, but it’s not that unlikely that a club like Liverpool could look at him. He’s done an incredible job at Bournemouth.

“I look at Bournemouth and the way they play and the amount of talent that has just improved under him.

“Now, this is a guy that couldn’t buy a win when he first got the job. And since then, his teams have literally been on Champions League form and they’re not too far off the Champions League spots now.”

Those comments underline why Iraola’s stock has risen so sharply. Coaches capable of improving players, creating identity and competing above expectations are increasingly valuable in elite football.

Slot Future Could Define Liverpool Summer

Liverpool’s summer already promises major change across the Premier League managerial landscape. Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Chelsea and Manchester United are all linked with uncertainty in the dugout.

That context only increases speculation around Slot and Liverpool.

For now, Slot remains in charge and still has the opportunity to steady the mood around Anfield. Champions League qualification offers stability, but Liverpool supporters expect far more than merely securing a top-four finish. They demand progress, intensity and a side capable of challenging for the title.

Iraola’s emergence as a possible candidate reflects how highly he is now regarded across the game. Whether Liverpool act on that admiration remains unclear, but his name is unlikely to disappear from the conversation any time soon.
