Liverpool welcome Tottenham to Anfield on Sunday afternoon in a Premier League contest that carries weight at both ends of the table. With European qualification on Liverpool’s agenda and Tottenham fighting to stay clear of the relegation places, the meeting on Merseyside has significance that stretches well beyond a routine fixture.
Liverpool approach the match knowing that recent results have complicated their pursuit of a top four finish. Tottenham arrive facing a more immediate threat, a run of defeats leaving their Premier League status under increasing scrutiny.
Liverpool remain firmly involved in the congested race for Champions League qualification. Their most recent league outing ended in frustration, a defeat at Wolves that prevented Arne Slot’s side from climbing into the top four.
The result at Molineux pushed Liverpool down to sixth place, behind Chelsea on goal difference. It was a reminder of the fine margins shaping the Premier League table this season.
There has been some encouragement since. Liverpool secured FA Cup progress by defeating Wolves in the return meeting, though European competition brought another setback as they fell 1-0 to Galatasaray in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.
The challenge now is to translate possession and attacking pressure into goals, particularly against opponents who may offer more space than recent rivals.
Tottenham arrive on Merseyside amid one of the most difficult periods of their season. Without a Premier League win in 2026, the club sits just one point above the relegation zone.

Their recent form has been alarming. A 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in midweek made it six defeats in a row across all competitions. Interim manager Igor Tudor has yet to oversee a victory since taking charge, leaving Tottenham supporters increasingly anxious about the months ahead.
For Spurs, each remaining fixture now carries enormous weight. This trip to Liverpool represents the first of nine matches that could ultimately decide their survival.
Liverpool could receive a boost with the possible return of Alisson Becker. The Brazilian goalkeeper missed the trip to Istanbul due to a fitness concern, though Slot suggested he expects him to be available.
Federico Chiesa also missed the midweek match because of illness and will be assessed before the game. Liverpool remain without Alexander Isak, Wataru Endo, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley, while Jeremie Frimpong, Cody Gakpo and Andy Robertson are pushing for starting roles.
Tottenham face significant selection issues. Micky van de Ven is suspended following his red card in the 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace. Several players remain unavailable through injury, including Wilson Odobert, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ben Davies and Lucas Bergvall.
There are also doubts surrounding Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha after a clash of heads in the Atletico Madrid match.
Slot should get his wish on Sunday, playing a team that is unlikely to set up in a low block in an attempt to frustrate his Liverpool side. So there will be no excuses for not creating chances aplenty.
Then it will be on his attackers to be ruthless and put a poor Tottenham team to the sword.
At some point, you would assume Spurs will start picking up some wins and ease fears of relegation. We just don’t expect them to get anything at Anfield.
Liverpool to win, 2-1.
