Liverpool hope to finally wrap up a transfer they first looked at over five years ago. A long time coming, then.
Liverpool are in desperate need of a centre-back. Giovanni Leoni is now out for a long, long time - potentially a full year, leaving the Reds with just three senior options.
Anyone who remembers 2020/21 will tell you that's a bad situation to be in.

But the need actually goes deeper than that. Liverpool also need to think about replacing Ibrahima Konate, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
Joe Gomez, too, has been heavily linked with an exit. AC Milan tried to sign him right at the end of the summer window, only to lose out after Liverpool's failure to sign Marc Guehi.
Then there's the need for a long-term Virgil van Dijk successor. That was supposed to be Konate, of course, but he could now depart.
Liverpool, then, are looking at potential options and that's reportedly turned their attention back onto a long-term target.
Bild claim that Liverpool are looking at Dayot Upamecano as a potential signing in 2026. The Frenchman is out of contract with Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
That would make him an ideal replacement for Konate, of course. What better way to replace someone leaving without a transfer fee than signing someone without a transfer fee?
Let alone someone who's also a French international centre-back with top-level experience. Liverpool couldn't really ask for more.
And they certainly know all about Upamecano. The Reds were in the mix for him back in 2020 before he signed for Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig.
