Ibrahima Konate Contract Uncertainty Adds to Liverpool’s Defensive Concerns

On Media Matters for Anfield Index, Dave Davis and Lewis Steele discussed the uncertainty around Ibrahima Konate’s future at Liverpool, with the defender’s contract set to expire next month.

For Liverpool, the timing is difficult. Arne Slot’s squad is already facing major summer change, and the possibility of losing another senior defender only adds to the sense of instability around Anfield.

Steele confused by mixed signals

Steele described the Konate situation as “mindboggling” and admitted the information around his future has shifted repeatedly.

“It changes every single day to be honest,” he told Davis, adding that it has done so “for the last six months.”

He explained that there had been moments when people believed Konate would leave, then moments when others were saying he would stay. Konate himself had suggested things were positive, but Steele said people are now “thinking it’s nowhere near a conclusion.”

His verdict was blunt: “I don’t have a clue what’s going to happen with that to be honest because everyone says something different.”

Liverpool risk another costly exit

Steele also questioned Liverpool’s handling of the situation, particularly given Konate’s value to the club.

“I also don’t get what Liverpool are playing at,” he said.

Even with debate around Konate’s performances, Steele stressed that Liverpool cannot ignore the financial side. He called Konate “a financial asset” and warned that the club are risking him “leaving out the back door for nothing.”

That concern feels especially sharp given Liverpool’s broader contract uncertainty and the expected defensive changes this summer.

Defensive rebuild could grow quickly

The Konate issue also links directly to Joe Gomez’s future. Steele said he expects Gomez to leave, which would leave Liverpool needing greater defensive security.

With Giovanni Leoni expected to return and other options in the squad, there is still uncertainty over whether that will be enough.

Steele summed it up clearly: “There’s a lot of ifs.”

For Liverpool and Arne Slot, Konate’s future is now one of the most important questions of the summer. Losing him for nothing would leave another gap in the squad, another leadership issue and another recruitment problem at Anfield.
