Liverpool won't know how to take Trent Alexander-Arnold's LATEST comments | OneFootball

Liverpool have enjoyed a brilliant start to the season under new head coach Arne Slot and the Reds currently sit top of the Premier League.

After the start to the campaign that Liverpool have had under Slot, it isn’t too hard to imagine them challenging for trophies, maybe even as soon as this season.

Slot has already overcome Liverpool’s fiercest rival with a 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford and Liverpool are also one of only seven teams to have won their opening two UEFA Champions League games.

Liverpool’s impressive start has been somewhat overshadowed by the contract situations of star trio Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation

The future of all three of Liverpool’s out-of-contract stars is uncertain but Alexander-Arnold’s situation is unique.

The 26-year-old is the club’s vice-captain but he is also the only one of the three to have come through Liverpool’s academy and, of course, he is the only Scouser.

This means that there are different expectations placed on him as a player, both Salah and Van Dijk have played for other clubs before so there is less strife in seeing them play for other clubs again.

Alexander-Arnold on the other hand has always been a Liverpool player, and it is harder to imagine him playing elsewhere.

As things stand Trent will leave Anfield at the end of the season on a free transfer once his contract expires and Real Madrid are one of the clubs interested in picking him up.

Trent offers cryptic outlook on his future

Whilst on international duty with England, for whom Trent has made 31 senior appearances, the fullback has given a cryptic outlook on his future plans.

“This was a conversation I had last camp with (Eberechi) Eze when we were going to Ireland,” Alexander-Arnold said speaking to ITV. “I was on the coach down the airport and we had this conversation. I said, you know, that there’s a chance I may never win another trophy in my career again. There’s a chance of that. There’s a chance I win many, many more.”

When you consider Liverpool’s impressive start to the season it isn’t too hard to picture Liverpool competing for trophies under new boss Slot so although it is technically a possibility that Trent never wins another trophy, that doesn’t seem likely.

“You’ll only know the morning after you retire. You’ll look yourself in the mirror and you’ll have a feeling of either regret or satisfaction of what you have achieved.

“But I don’t think you can value that on trophies and medals or goals and assists; anything like that. It’s more [that] I give it absolutely everything from start to finish and I’ve put everything into it.”

These comments seem a bit odd when less than a month ago Trent told The Athletic: “The most important thing is trophies if I’m being honest, I want to win trophies.”

His sentiments seem to have changed and, whilst some Liverpool supporters may see this as a positive, it can be perceived that Trent himself is unsure about what he wants and what his future holds.

Trent’s Liverpool future

If Trent is fighting feelings of uncertainty, it hasn’t yet affected his on-pitch performance, and the fullback has been praised for his defensive improvement this season.

The Reds’ vice-captain is a highly professional individual and however this contract saga ends it is unlikely that he will let his performance on the pitch be affected.

Speaking to ITV, Trent said:

“As long as I can say that, that every single day I put everything in to it, I tried to get better every single day, I tried to improve myself, I tried to be the best player I could be for the team and I tried to help the team win as many games as possible, and I believe that I maximised the potential that everyone told me from a very young age that I had, then I’ll be more than satisfied.”

Trent’s future is uncertain, and it is unlikely anything will be revealed until his decision has been made, but it is clear this isn’t a decision the 26-year-old is taking lightly.

Although all Liverpool supporters will want Alexander-Arnold to remain at Anfield for years to come, all they can ask from the ‘scouser in the team’ is for him to give his all every time he steps out onto the pitch for Liverpool.
