New £116million signing Wirtz in line to make his first Liverpool appearance
New Liverpool signing Florian Wirtz is in line to make his first appearance for the Reds on what will be an emotional day at Deepdale.
Liverpool face Preston in their first pre-season friendly of the summer and their first game since the death of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
Wirtz, a £116million signing from Bayer Leverkusen, is one of four new arrivals who could make their Liverpool debuts, along with Giorgi Mamardashvili, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez.
Wirtz could line up in attacking midfield alongside Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo on either side.
Goalkeeper Mamardashvili will be looking to make his long-awaited debut, having agreed to join Liverpool from Valencia last summer.
The back four could consist of new full-backs Frimpong and Kerkez, while Virgil van Dijk is expected to start.
Another goalkeeper in Freddie Woodman could also be involved, less than two weeks after swapping Preston for Anfield.
Youngsters James McConnell and Amara Nallo will be in line for minutes.
Liverpool confirmed on Friday that they have retired Jota’s No20 shirt number in honour of the Portugal star, and both clubs will pay tribute to him ahead of kick-off on Sunday.
There will be a rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone ahead of kick-off, a minute’s silence will be observed and both sets of players will wear black armbands.
Predicted Liverpool XI: Mamardashvili; Bradley, Van Dijk, Gomez, Kerkez; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Chiesa
