Liverpool return to action this Sunday when they visit Preston North End for their first pre-season fixture. It promises to be an emotional day, the team’s first outing since the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club will continue to honour Jota’s memory at Deepdale, with players, staff and supporters united in tribute.
While the focus naturally leans towards remembrance, Liverpool manager Arne Slot is also turning attention to the footballing matters at hand. The Premier League-winning boss, now entering his second season at Anfield, is expected to hand opportunities to several youngsters during pre-season. Among the most talked about is 18-year-old centre-back Amara Nallo.
Despite an unfortunate debut, where Nallo saw red against PSV Eindhoven in February, Liverpool hold him in high regard. The sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen has effectively promoted Nallo to fourth-choice centre-half behind Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté and Joe Gomez. This opens a window for the talented teenager to make his mark under Slot.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist David Lynch offered insights on what to expect.
“I think Amara Nallo will get opportunities,” Lynch said. “There’s a big talent there, he’s looked great at youth level, very composed in possession, strong and quick and just a good defender.”
Lynch went on to underline that Nallo’s sending-off should not define him. “He made that mistake in his first game but he’s still only 18 years old, so you can’t hold that against him. I think there are going to be chances for him to quickly move on from that because Liverpool are a little bit short at centre-half at the moment, because Quansah’s gone.”
Liverpool are actively assessing their defensive options, with Parma’s Giovanni Leoni reportedly on their radar as a long-term investment. However, pre-season offers a rare platform for academy graduates to showcase their readiness.
Nallo will be eager to follow in the footsteps of Quansah, who seized his own opportunity two seasons ago and earned a place in the senior squad. While the club’s recruitment plans suggest a new signing may arrive before the season begins, strong pre-season displays could see Nallo make a case for more regular involvement.
Arne Slot has already shown his willingness to blend youth with experience, a philosophy that contributed to Liverpool’s title-winning campaign last term. For Nallo, the message is clear: impress now, and you may just shape your own future at Anfield.
