Orlando Pride star Lizbeth Ovalle has won FIFA’s 2025 Marta Award for the best goal in women’s football.
Ovalle, who joined the Orlando Pride in August, won the prize after her stunning goal for Tigres against Guadalajara back in March.
The Mexican winger met a Jenni Hermoso cross with an audacious acrobatic goal which the opposition goalkeeper did not see coming.
Ovalle leaped and adjusted her body in mid-air, before making perfect connection with the ball, which looped into the far corner.
The goal sparked wild celebrations for Tigres, who went on to win the Liga MX Femenil match 2-0.
It is just the second time that the Marta Award has been handed out. The award was named after the Brazil icon who won the inaugural award last year for her thunderous strike from the edge of the box in a clash between Brazil and Jamaica.#
Ovalle, in a social media post published by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, said: “I’m grateful to have won the FIFA Marta Award for 2025.
“From the moment I was nominated it has been a very special feeling and seeing so many incredible goals, including Marta, who I am very proud to have as a teammate today, I felt enormous excitement.
“Any of those great goals could have won the award and the fact that they chosen mine fills me with pride.”
Meanwhile, Hannah Hampton has won the award for The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper.
It has been an excellent year for Ovalle, who left Tigres to play for NWSL side Orlando Pride in August.
Ovalle broke the world record transfer fee with her £1.1 million move to Orlando.
It came not long after Arsenal made Olivia Smith the first £1m player in women’s football.
Explaining why she joined Orlando Pride, Ovalle said she was keen to move to one of the top leagues in world football.
Ovalle scored one goal in 12 appearances for Orlando. The Pride were knocked out of the NWSL Playoffs at the semi-final stage to eventual champions Gotham FC.
