After being left out of the German national team in October, Leroy Sané has been recalled by Julian Nagelsmann for the upcoming games against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland.
Writing in a column for Sky Germany, Germany legend Lothar Matthäus stated he would never have left Sané out and argued that the winger is the same player he was before his summer move from Bayern Munich to Galatasaray.
“I would never have left Sané out. As a coach, I have to give the player my trust. Just because you move to Turkey doesn’t make you a worse player,” Matthäus pointed out.
“I can’t judge based on the league. Otherwise – provocatively speaking – anyone playing in the Premier League would automatically have a regular spot in the national team.
“The Turkish league is stronger than many think. Galatasaray will play at least eight top-level Champions League matches this season, and they’ve beaten Liverpool and Ajax.”
For Matthäus, Sané should receive the same patience from Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann that Florian Wirtz has been given following his move to Liverpool.
“Sané first had to settle in Istanbul, just like Florian Wirtz in Liverpool. Why should Wirtz be given time and Sané not?”
