Nottingham Forest are pushing to reinforce midfield as they target Tottenham youngster Lucas Bergvall after last term’s survival fight, with European ambitions under Oliver Glasner. Xaver Schlager has already signed on a free two-year deal, following Elliot Anderson’s £116m move to Manchester City.

According to Nottingham Post, Forest have had a £38m offer for the 20-year-old Sweden international rejected but remain in the chase, with Newcastle United linked. Bergvall is understood to be open to a switch to the City Ground amid concerns over limited minutes in London. He made one start and 112 minutes in total under Roberto De Zerbi.

Various fees have been floated between £45m and £60m. The midfielder fits Forest’s recent focus on recruiting young talent with room to develop.

Named in Spurs’ XI against Sydney FC on Wednesday, Bergvall was later the subject of De Zerbi’s comments that he had not asked to leave. The head coach wants him to stay, yet stressed fierce competition after the arrivals of Matheus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali and said no place is guaranteed.

After Sweden’s World Cup round of 32 loss to France, Bergvall said his aim is regular games in his position. He added he had focused on the tournament and would see what happens next.
