According to L'Équipe, Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne is set to sign for Paris Saint-Germain after the World Cup. The France international, with 62 caps, is due to start against Spain in Tuesday’s semi-final barring a late setback. It would mark a return 10 years after he left.

Digne previously played for PSG from 2013 to 2015, then spent 2015-16 on loan at Roma before joining Barcelona in 2016. That first stint proved mixed.

He arrived in 2013 aged 19 after a full season with Lille and a France U20 world title. Regarded as the leading left-back prospect, he chose PSG amid Monaco interest. The fee, about €15m, reflected his potential for club and country.

PSG were geared to instant results, win Ligue 1 and go deep in the Champions League. In that context Laurent Blanc, who also arrived in 2013, often preferred Maxwell’s experience and tactical nous at left-back. Digne struggled to earn a sustained run.

In Ligue 1 he featured in only 15 games each season. In Europe he played two matches in year one, then just four minutes across the entire second campaign. Continuity never came.

Despite collecting silverware, two Ligue 1, two League Cups, one Coupe de France and three Trophée des Champions, minutes remained scarce. He left on loan for Roma in 2015 and played regularly, making 33 Serie A appearances. Barcelona then signed him for €12.5m in 2016, with limited action again before he later established himself in the Premier League.
