Luciano strike sees São Paulo beat Mirassol in the Brasileirão

On Saturday (25), São Paulo defeated Mirassol 1-0 at the Brinco de Ouro Stadium, in Campinas (SP), in the 13th round of the Brazilian Championship. The Tricolor’s goal was scored by Luciano.

With his goal this Saturday, the number 10 now stands alone as São Paulo’s third-highest scorer in the history of the Brazilian Championship, with 66 goals, ahead of Rogério Ceni, who scored 65 — only Serginho Chulapa (83) and Luis Fabiano (108) are ahead of him.

Luciano has scored in the Tricolor’s last four matches: in the 2-0 win over Boston River-URU in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana; in the 2-1 loss to Vasco in the Brazilian Championship; in the 1-0 win over Juventude in the Copa do Brasil; and in this 1-0 victory over Mirassol in the Brazilian Championship.

In the first half on Saturday, São Paulo put in a strong performance. The Tricolor threatened in the 14th minute, when Artur received the ball through the middle, beat his marker, and shot facing the goal, but the ball went out over the end line. In the 23rd minute, Artur made another individual play, beat three defenders, entered the box, and passed to Luciano, who set up Calleri for a shot, but the opposing defense prevented the finish. The score remained 0-0 until halftime.

In the second half, São Paulo kept up the pressure and managed to turn their chances into a goal. In the 13th minute, Luciano received the ball at the edge of the box, controlled it, and shot, but the ball went just wide of the post. The goal came in the 30th minute after winning the ball back in the attacking half. The move was built through the middle, with a pass from Luan to Lucca, who found Wendell on the left. The full-back advanced to the byline and crossed to Luciano, who headed the ball into the back of the net to secure the Tricolor’s victory: 1-0, the final score.

The Tricolor return to action against Millonarios on Tuesday (28) at Nemesio Camacho El Campín Stadium in Bogotá (COL), at 9:30 p.m., in the third round of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana. In the Brasileirão, the next match will be against Bahia on Sunday (03), at 4:00 p.m., at Cícero de Souza Marques Stadium in Bragança Paulista (SP).
