Luciano Vulcano has taken charge of AC Monza’s youth team, his first position since leaving Sunderland earlier this year.
He joined Régis Le Bris as assistant head coach last summer, then departed by mutual consent after the coaching setup was judged not to be the right fit, according to Sunderland Echo.
Monza will compete again in Serie A next season after winning promotion, and the youth post gives Vulcano his first experience as a head coach. The Italian retains ambitions to lead a senior side in the future.
Earlier this week he reflected on an unforgettable spell at Sunderland in a social media post, expressing hope of returning to work in the country and league and offering heartfelt thanks to the club.
Sunderland initially chose not to replace him, but have now added former Southampton and Portugal centre back José Fonte to the coaching staff. Fonte starts on Monday ahead of the club’s pre-season tour of the US, in his first coaching role since retiring. Director of football Florent Ghisolfi said Fonte brings top-level experience, energy and leadership as the club looks to push forward in the Premier League and on the European stage.
Fonte will work alongside Le Bris with a group that includes Michael Proctor, Alessandro Barcherini, James Brayne, who leads set pieces, Neil Cutler, goalkeepers, and Isidre Ramón Madir, chief analyst.
