Pisa created the game’s first genuine opportunity, when Filip Stojilkovic hit a first-time strike towards goal, but Mike Maignan made a superb save to deny him.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek put Milan ahead in the 39th minute, glancing a header home from Zachary Athekame in-swinging cross.

Milan looked to have scored a second in the 48th minute when Adrien Rabiot volleyed into the top corner, but the goal was ruled out for a handball in the build-up.

The visitors were then handed a penalty following a foul on Strahinja Pavlovic, but Niclas Fullkrug failed to convert, sending his effort wide.

Fullkrug’s miss proved costly as Pisa drew level against the run of play in the 71st minute, through Felipe Loyola who struck into the bottom-right corner.

Five minutes from time, Luca Modric scored the winner for Milan, becoming the third-oldest player to score a goal in the Serie A.

Rabiot was sent off in the stoppage time for a second bookable offence, but Milan held on to claim the victory.

Milan have now cut leaders Inter Milan lead at the top of the standings to five points. The Nerazzurri host Juventus at San Siro on Saturday evening.
