Luke O’Nien has praised Simon Moore’s influence after Sunderland triggered a one-year contract extension for the 36-year-old goalkeeper.
According to Sunderland Echo, the former Coventry City, Sheffield United and Cardiff City goalkeeper has been a key figure in Régis Le Bris’ squad despite limited starts, valued for his standards, experience and impact in the dressing room.
O’Nien said there are always ways to contribute and highlighted how Moore, despite not playing this season, connects the group and helps drive the culture.
He revealed he kept Moore’s shirt in his locker all campaign as motivation, adding that the veteran has pushed him to improve.
After Europa League qualification against Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on the final day of the Premier League season, O’Nien lauded Moore’s personality and recalled the goalkeeper sending an anniversary photo from their celebrations.
Moore made a handful of appearances last season and has provided experienced cover alongside Robin Roefs, Melker Ellborg and Anthony Patterson. The deal keeps him at the Stadium of Light as the club prepare for a Premier League and European campaign next season.
