AC Milan captain Mike Maignan has insisted that he and his team-mates are ‘hungry’ to go out and claim another bit of silverware.

Milan have the chance to lift a second trophy in what has been an otherwise disappointing season as they take on Bologna in Wednesday night’s Coppa Italia final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Earlier on Tuesday, the players and staff met the President of Italy, and they trained in the afternoon.

The Rossoneri have Maignan to thank in part for the run to the final of the competition, given that he kept Inter to just one goal over 180 minutes across the two legs of the semi-final. The second leg clean sheet in particular stood out, as Milan won their third derby of the season.

Maignan will lead Milan out with the armband on tomorrow in the capital, and he spoke from the press conference room at the Olimpico on the eve of the game to preview the clash. His comments are via MilanNews.

You know everything about the team you captain. You know the soul, the difficult moments. How much desire do you have to bring this trophy home?

“We are so hungry because we want to bring this trophy home, for all Milan fans, and we know how important it is to play finals and win trophies for Milan.”

You have been at Milan for many years, can you tell us about the mood of the team?

“We know that tomorrow is an important day for this season, for this moment, also for Milan because we can write a page in the history of the club. But we must not have too much pressure, we must keep our cool that has allowed us to get to today.

“Of course we are focused to give our best tomorrow, but without playing another game that we know how to play.”

Do you think the three-man defence is more useful for the team, that it gives more security and tranquility, or is it instead because the physical condition has improved?

“I always have confidence, whether we play with two, three, one. I always have confidence in my team-mates. There are moments when the wind turns in our favourite and even if we put 9 players at the back the wind blows against us we can concede goals.

“Now we are in a good moment and we have to take advantage and continue like this because it hasn’t always been like this.”

You will be aware that the season has been difficult, but tomorrow could be the night that changes your morale…

“Honestly, everything that happened before doesn’t matter anymore. Only tomorrow matters, and tomorrow we have to be focused on this match, not thinking about the past, not thinking about what we did 3 days ago, not thinking about the matches that are coming up against Roma and Monza.

“We just have to think about tomorrow’s match. It is certain that if we win it is positive, so the only objective is to think about what we can manage tomorrow.”

This is the only Italian trophy you are missing…

“For me, as for anyone who is hungry for victories, it is very important to win every trophy.”
