Kobbie Mainoo has ended months of uncertainty over his future by signing a new long-term contract with Manchester United until 2031.
The 21-year-old midfielder, one of the club’s brightest academy products in recent years, has agreed a five-year extension that also includes a sizeable pay rise. It is a major boost for United, who have been keen to secure the future of one of their most promising homegrown talents.
Mainoo’s previous deal had been due to run until 2027, with the option of an extra year, but talks over fresh terms had dragged on during a difficult first half of the season.
The England international found himself on the fringes under former boss Ruben Amorim and managed only limited Premier League minutes before January. At one stage, he was even interested in a loan move to Napoli in search of regular football.
United, however, made it clear they had no intention of letting him leave and wanted him to remain part of the club’s long-term plans.
Since Michael Carrick took charge in January, Mainoo’s situation has changed dramatically. The midfielder has returned to favour and started all but one of the club’s last 12 league matches, missing one game through injury.
His improved role under Carrick helped speed up negotiations, with both player and club now reaching an agreement before the end of the campaign.
