Dennis Beyer reports that Mainz and Stuttgart have reached an agreement over the transfer of Congolese attacker Silas Katompa Mvumpa. Mainz have successfully convinced Stuttgart to reduce the transfer fee from €1.5m to the low-six-figure range. Stuttgart will nevertheless – per the Sky journalist – still receive a fee above €1m should Mainz manage to avoid relegation.
Silas was also linked with a move to 2. Bundesliga outfit Hannover 96, but the Lower Saxons have found a different solution in the form of another experienced Bundesliga player in the form of SC Freiburg’s Noah Weißhaupt. Silas will thus get a chance to prove himself once again in the German top division. The 27-year-old will surely be eager to once again prove that he can hack it in the top flight.
Absolutely. To acquire the 18-times capped international for less than €1m constitutes an excellent deal. Stuttgart were still shopping Silas for upwards of €8m this past summer. The once €25m-valued player never fully recovered from the double whammy of his brutal ACL tear suffered in the spring of 2021, followed by revelations that summer that his name and age had been falsified by his agent.
Silas (formerly known as Silas Wamangituka) faced fines and court appearances in the German legal system once it was revealed that his official state documents had been forged. The distraction clearly affected his footballing form.
Silas still managed to score five league goals in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 Bundesliga campaigns, respectively. Silas also registered five tallies whilst on loan at Red Star Belgrade last year before succumbing to injury.
