A development has been revealed regarding Callum Brittain's Middlesbrough move
Middlesbrough‘s move for Blackburn Rovers defender Callum Brittain could be on the brink of collapsing.
Rob Edwards has taken over from Michael Carrick at the Riverside and was looking to bolster his defence with the 27-year-old.
However, those plans may now have been scuppered after a recent update has emerged.
Boro looked set to secure the Blackburn full-back’s services, after Rovers’ boss Valerien Ismael admitted that Brittain had refused to play in a pre-season friendly against Accrington Stanley.
However, the deal may now be off.
According to the Football Insider, the two clubs have been unable to agree on a transfer fee for Brittain, with the move now in real danger.
Alan Nixon revealed via his Patreon channel that Boro initially put forward a package of £2.5 million, which was rejected, but that they are preparing to come back with an increased offer of around £3 million.
The 27-year-old has refused to sign a new contract at Ewood Park and is opting to exit the Lancashire club.
Derby County and Wrexham have also been credited with an interest in the full-back, with former boss John Eustace keen to add yet another ex-Blackburn player to his ranks.
Brittain featured 33 times for Blackburn last term and performed at a consistently high level throughout, which has brought forward interest from the trio of Championship clubs.
Brittain began his career with MK Dons, running out over 120 times for the club before moving to Barnsley.
The defender has just one year remaining on his deal at Ewood Park, which both clubs will be conscious of when negotiating a fee for his services.
However, there is a clear difference in valuation at this moment in time, which could threaten the chance of a transfer happening.
Boro spent the early stages of the summer addressing their managerial situation, which has now been resolved.
But this has majorly delayed their transfer business, whilst other clubs in the division have already recruited numerous new additions.
Middlesbrough’s interest in Danny Ings and Brittain has been well-documented but is yet to materialise into anything concrete.
Now, the rumours emerging that the move for Rovers’ full-back could be in jeopardy will be seriously concerning for Boro supporters.
There is still time left in the window, and the North East outfit could end the summer with their ideal recruits, but the longer time drags on, the more they risk heading into next season unprepared.
In the Brittain scenario, the 27-year-old’s contract situation should play into their hands during negotiations.
Perhaps they may need to loosen their stance somewhat to secure the defender’s services, which could happen soon in the form of their improved bid, and finally kick off their summer.
