Man, 36, dies in Peñíscola amid Spain’s World Cup celebrations

A 36-year-old local man died in the port area of Peñíscola in the early hours of Monday as Spain marked their World Cup win.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the Guardia Civil confirmed the death and has opened an investigation.
Emergency crews recovered him from the water but could only certify his death. The cause has not yet been established, with an autopsy to be carried out at the Institute of Legal Medicine.
The force has indicated that initial signs point to drowning, pending forensic confirmation of the circumstances.
The incident coincided with celebrations of Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final, sealed by a Ferran goal in the 106th minute.
Authorities have not, at this stage, linked the deceased to any specific festivities.
