Bernardo Silva’s Manchester City story appears to be edging towards its final chapter, with journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu reporting that Atletico Madrid are in “advanced talks” to sign the Portuguese midfielder this summer.
After nine years in England, Silva is said to be ready to leave City as a free agent, and Atletico now appear to have moved firmly into position. Sabuncuoğlu claims the two sides are “close to an agreement”, although no deal has yet been finalised.
At 31, Silva remains a footballer of rare intelligence, balance and technical courage. Manchester City supporters know exactly what he has given them, control in tight spaces, relentless pressing, and the ability to turn chaotic moments into calm possession.
The report states that Atletico are now in “advanced talks” with Silva, with Diego Simeone’s side seeing him as a potential replacement for Antoine Griezmann.
That makes footballing sense. Silva is not a direct Griezmann replica, but he carries similar traits, experience, cunning, movement between lines and the ability to knit attacks together with subtlety rather than noise.
Silva’s expected departure would mark the end of one of the Premier League’s most decorated modern spells. Under Pep Guardiola, he became a symbol of City’s technical superiority and collective hunger.
Few players have understood Guardiola’s demands better. Silva pressed like a winger, passed like a central midfielder and competed like a street footballer protecting every blade of grass.
Reports have also linked him with Juventus and Galatasaray, while Chelsea were surprisingly mentioned as having made contact. Yet Atletico’s emergence feels particularly compelling because Spain would place Silva closer to his family in Portugal.
It is reported that Atletico are “taking advantage of the fact that the Manchester City man wants to be closer to his family in Portugal after nine years in England.”

Atletico’s interest reflects a club planning carefully for life beyond Griezmann. Simeone has always valued players with sacrifice in their game, and Silva’s work rate would fit naturally into that culture.
He may not have the explosive pace of younger attacking midfielders, but his brain remains quick enough to shape matches. In La Liga, where rhythm, positioning and technical craft carry huge value, Silva could extend his elite career with real authority.
There is caution, though. The report itself notes that Sport Witness would treat the claim carefully because it has “yet to be reported in Spain.” That matters. Transfer stories can move quickly, especially when free agents of Silva’s calibre are involved.
Still, Sabuncuoğlu’s reporting around Turkish interest gives the story relevance. If Galatasaray are drifting from the picture, Atletico’s path may be clearing.
For Manchester City supporters, this would hurt, even if everyone knew the day was coming. Bernardo Silva has been one of the defining players of Guardiola’s era, not always the loudest name, not always the headline act, but often the one who made everything work.
City fans will remember the big nights, the relentless running, the way he took responsibility in hostile stadiums. He played with courage, bite and intelligence. Losing that blend is never simple.
There is also respect in seeing him choose a move that suits his life. After nine years in England, wanting to be closer to family in Portugal feels understandable. Atletico would offer Champions League football, a serious manager and a league where his technical gifts should still shine.
City, though, must replace more than a player. They must replace trust. Guardiola trusted Silva in the biggest matches because he rarely hid, rarely wasted possession and rarely failed to compete.
If this agreement goes through, City supporters should give him gratitude rather than regret. He helped define a golden age. Atletico may be getting him at 31, but they are still getting a magnificent footballer.
