Man City return to the Etihad Stadium tonight with a significant decision-making puzzle for Pep Guardiola, as they prepare to face Aston Villa in a game that could further define the race for Champions League qualification.
Saturday’s 2-0 win at Everton, hard-fought and late in delivery, offered a glimpse into City’s shifting tactical identity. With Nico O’Reilly and Mateo Kovacic securing the points, Guardiola may be inclined to stick with continuity in midfield, particularly as Kovacic prepares to make his 200th Premier League appearance.

Up front, rotation looms. Savinho and Bernardo Silva have seen their influence wane, while Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku appear ready to reclaim starting roles. Doku’s exclusion in recent matches had less to do with form and more with structure, as Guardiola explained: “I’ve been so unfair with him in the last games. But the only reason that he doesn’t play lately is because we didn’t attack in the last games with wingers.”

The context was tactical, not personal. Guardiola added: “Jeremy in the final third is unstoppable. I’m really pleased that he played really good (at Everton).”
Kevin De Bruyne may be under pressure to retain his place, with James McAtee offering an energetic alternative. Up front, Omar Marmoush is expected to start again, rewarded for his recent work rate and movement.

In goal, Stefan Ortega remains the preferred option with Ederson still unavailable. Manuel Akanji is likely to continue on the bench after a return cameo at Goodison Park, while Abdukodir Khusanov, once seen as a breakout figure, has faded from the starting picture.
