Mission impossible as City look to overturn heavy deficit

Manchester City have a near-impossible task when they take on Real Madrid on Tuesday.

City are 3-0 down on aggregate in their Champions League last 16 tie.

Los Blancos won out in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, as Federico Valverde scored a first-half hat-trick.

Now, Pep Guardiola’s men are in need of a historic comeback if they are to reach the last eight of Europe’s elite competition.

They were dealt another blow in the Premier League title race at the weekend as West Ham held them to a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium, allowing Arsenal, who beat Everton 2-0, to extend their lead at the top to eight points.

It leaves Guardiola and his side in a difficult position, trying to juggle priorities of domestic and continental competition, while also keeping one eye on the upcoming Carabao Cup final against Arsenal this weekend.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Man City vs Real Madrid is scheduled for an 8pm GMT kick-off on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

Man City vs Real Madrid team news

For the hosts, it is just the two absentees, with Rico Lewis and Josko Gvardiol both out of this encounter.

Lewis is sidelined with a twisted ankle while Gvardiol is out long term with a broken leg.

Mateo Kovacic is back in training after ankle surgery but is unlikely to feature here.

For Madrid, star duo Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe are both in contention to start here after they were named in the travelling squad.

Both missed out with injury for the first leg last week, but they could be in a position to play some minutes as Arbeloa eyes the last eight.

Alvaro Carreras is also back after a calf problem, but Ferland Mendy is out with a hamstring injury.

Rodrygo, Dani Ceballos and Eder Militao are their other absentees.

Man City vs Real Madrid prediction

While City have a knack of unlikely comebacks, this one could be a step too far, especially with the returns of Mbappe and Bellingham.

Three goals is quite the deficit to overcome, and they come into this fixture not in the best of form either.

That said, they are strong at home and have enough quality to beat Madrid, but whether they have four unanswered goals in them is another question.

Man City to win, 2-1.
