Manchester United have today learned the hard way that their win over Brentford didn’t come at no cost.

The 2-1 turnaround against the Bees last Saturday marked the end of a five-game winless streak for Erik ten Hag’s men. After last night’s 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce, it remains their only victory in the last seven matches across all competitions.

Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund sealed all three points in the cagey affair, with United forced to complete a second-half comeback to cancel out Ethan Pinnock’s opener – and it was nothing short of a controversial goal.

Referee Samuel Barrott instructed Matthijs de Ligt to exit the pitch and receive treatment for a head injury, which was causing him to bleed heavily onto his shirt. It then meant that Brentford were able to take their corner kick with one less United body to worry about in the area, and, as fate would have it, they went on to score when Pinnock headed home past Andre Onana on the stroke of half-time.

As you’d expect, De Ligt and United’s coaching staff were incandescent on the touchline. They weren’t afraid to let the officials know their thoughts on the matter, either, resulting in Ten Hag and assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy being brandished yellow cards for their furious antics.

Darren Fletcher hit with FA charge

Darren Fletcher also continued the onslaught into the tunnel during the interval, having made his way down from the press box to give Barrott and his personnel a piece of his mind.

The Football Association has confirmed this morning – via the FA Spokesperson on X/Twitter – that Fletcher’s behaviour has led to him being charged for acting in an ‘improper and/or confrontational manner’ and using ‘abusive and/or insulting words’ towards the match officials. He has until Tuesday, October 29, to respond.

Meanwhile, United are undergoing their final preparations ahead of travelling down South to face West Ham on Sunday.
