As Manchester United prepare to host Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday 17 August, attention turns to the fitness of key figures Andre Onana, Lisandro Martinez, Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui. Amorim will be eager to welcome back as many as possible for what could be a pivotal early-season fixture.
United’s first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana has endured a frustrating pre-season, missing all matches after sustaining a hamstring injury in the first week of training at Carrington. His absence saw Altay Bayindir step in, with Tom Heaton providing cover. Speculation has linked the club with other keepers, including Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, but no transfer has materialised.
Onana was back in training during the Premier League Summer Series, although he took no part in match action in the United States. Speaking earlier this month, he said, “I feel good, I feel great. It’s been a few difficult weeks, but yeah, hopefully, I will be back for the start of the season.”

If his own assessment is accurate, the Cameroon international could reclaim his place for the Arsenal clash.
Potential return date: Arsenal (h) – Sunday, 17 August 2025
Lisandro Martinez’s absence since February has been keenly felt. The Argentine defender underwent surgery for an ACL injury earlier this year and has been carefully building up fitness. He joined the squad on the pre-season tour to the US but did not feature in any games, only appearing in selected training sessions.
Amorim sees Martinez as a vital component on the left side of his back three, and the coaching staff will be cautious not to rush him. No specific date has been confirmed, though hopes remain for a late 2025 return.

Joshua Zirkzee, a summer arrival, has also been sidelined, missing pre-season with what is believed to be a muscular problem picked up before the US tour. While he travelled with the team, he did not join in full training abroad.
That changed recently, with the Dutch forward pictured at Carrington alongside his teammates. On 28 July he said, “I’ve got a small injury, but it shouldn’t take too long to recover now. I’ve got great physios working with me every day. It’s pre-season, so unlike last season, where I wanted to push myself to be back for the [Europa League] final, now I just want to be there for the start of the season.”
This points to a possible debut against Arsenal.

Noussair Mazraoui’s pre-season ended abruptly after being withdrawn at half-time in the friendly against Leeds in Stockholm. The club have not specified the nature of his injury and he has not been seen in recent training sessions. With Diogo Dalot fit and Amad Diallo showing promise at right wing-back, Amorim may hold back the Moroccan until he is fully ready.
