Man United legend with “forensic knowledge” of football set for iconic role | OneFootball

After being sacked by Plymouth Argyle for a poor set of results, Wayne Rooney is set to land a role on Match of the Day as one of their regular pundits.

The former Man United and Everton legend – and record goalscorer for the Red Devils – was recently picked by James Maddison as the greatest Premier League player ever.

Rooney wished he played for Celtic during his career but it didn’t work out, and neither did his managerial stints at Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City and Plymouth.

Having previously worked successfully as a pundit when his managerial services haven’t been required, it’s perhaps no surprise to understand that he could now become a regular pundit on the revamped Match of the Day.

The Sun note that he could get up to £200,000 for his work with the programme and the outlet quote a source as saying;

““Punditry is one of a number of options open to Wayne for the future. He worked alongside Gary (Lineker) and Co at the Euros last summer, and was a huge hit with viewers.

“He’s also eminently likeable with a forensic knowledge and love of the game.

“Match of the Day and a couple of other broadcasters are interested in having him on their programming.

“Wayne and the BBC are in early stage negotiations but it is looking promising and he is taking some time to work out exactly what he wants to do next.”

If there’s one thing that can’t be levelled at Rooney regarding his punditry it is that it’s ‘vanilla.’

The 39-year-old rarely sits on the fence with an opinion or two, and in that sense he is an engaging watch.
