Man United manager Ruben Amorim says the club will try to delay Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo’s departures to AFCON after Benjamin Sesko was struck down by injury.

Sesko will miss Monday’s Premier League clash with Everton at Old Trafford and be out of action for three weeks with a knee injury he sustained against Tottenham Hotspur before the international break.

The Red Devils could be left extremely short on attacking options next month when three of their players leave to play at the African Cup of Nations.

Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui are due to head to Africa on 7th December and could be away for up to seven weeks, depending on how their respective national teams perform at the tournament.

Sesko is expected to recover from his injury “more or less at the same time” as Mbeumo and Amad leave, according to Amorim. “I don’t want to say for sure but when they are going to the camp I expect to have Ben back.”

United are hopeful they can negotiate a deal with the Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Moroccan football associations to delay the trio’s release.

“We have the rules when we will have to release the players. We are trying to have the players a bit longer, but we will see.

“I think it is two weeks before the start [of the tournament on 21 December]. We will try to arrange something with the federation.”

Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez is returning to fitness following a long absence with a knee injury. Asked if the centre-back could fill in as a holding midfielder, Amorim responded: “I can think a smart intelligent football player can play in a lot of positions, but it is not the position for him. In an emergency he can play.

“I feel Licha is coming close to being able to play. We need to be careful. He is clearly in a better position.”

The United boss was also asked whether Luke Shaw can play as a left wing-back, rather than as one of three centre-backs. “He can play there, it is the load that a player does in that position it is a bit different. He is more prepared to do that. He is a smart player,” he replied.
