Man United will be questioning Toby Collyer's lack of game-time at West Brom so far

Manchester United loanee Toby Collyer has yet to be given the chance by Ryan Mason to make an impact for the Baggies this season after moving to the Hawthorns on a season-long loan.

Collyer, featured six times in the Premier League last season for the Red Devils and made the move to the Hawthorns for the 2025/26 in order to gain regular minutes and broaden his career in the EFL.

With the 21-year-old in search of further experience playing professional football as opposed to at academy level, his chosen destination of the West Midlands seemed like a good deal for all parties involved.

As for West Brom, prior to a ball being kicked, the midfield area was one that needed reinforcement in the summer, and landing a transfer for Collyer brought about much excitement from the Baggies fans, who were well aware of his abilities from cameos seen in the top-flight, as well as in the Europa League.

The hope was that the United loanee would hit the ground running under the guidance of Ryan Mason, and be an immediate success in the second-tier, but he just hasn't been given the chance to do so as of yet, to the frustration of Manchester United.

As aforementioned, Collyer's minutes in a Baggies shirt have been limited to say the least, with the young midfielder merely clocking up 38 minutes in four appearances, all coming from off the bench.

Collyer was brought on in the final four minutes of his first two fixtures, against Wrexham and Portsmouth, before being given another 12 and 18 minutes respectively, against Stoke and Derby.

It wasn't the start to life that Collyer was hoping for when being sent out on loan and the same applies to Manchester United, who wouldn't have thought their young starlet would receive such little time on the pitch in the early stages of the season.

With a couple of tough looking games coming up on the fixture list for the Baggies against table-toppers Middlesbrough and heavy promotion candidates Leicester, minutes again could be sparse for Collyer in the near future as Mason may want to stick with his current reliable midfield pairing of Jayson Molumby and Alex Mowatt.

However, after a bitterly disappointing loss at home to Derby on the weekend, a change in personnel in the engine room could benefit West Brom and give Collyer the opportunity to properly introduce himself to the Hawthorns.

Toby Collyer's game-time struggles at West Brom could mean a January recall from Manchester United

Although it's very early days in the Championship season, Mason seems to have his heart set on a midfield two of Molumby and Mowatt have played the majority of the game in every league fixture so far.

With Collyer patiently waiting in the wings for his opportunity to arise, if this pattern continues, then it wouldn't come as a surprise if Man United were to recall the 21-year-old when January comes around.

It is also difficult, however, to see where Collyer would fit in at United if he were to be recalled and make the step back up to the Premier League after a shortage of minutes. With the Red Devils not being in any European competition and facing an early Carabao Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby, the opportunity for their academy prospects to gain experience with the first-team would be lacking.

If Collyer's minutes do not improve with the Baggies, then for United as well as the player, frustrations could grow stronger.
