Manchester United have been dealt a worrying injury scare after medical staff had to stretcher off Manuel Ugarte during Uruguay’s 1-0 2026 World Cup defeat to Spain.
The Man Utd anchorman started in the heart of midfield as Marcelo Bielsa’s side looked to keep their tournament hopes alive.
However, the Man United star and his teammates endured a frustrating evening as Spain secured victory following a costly error from veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.
However, the biggest concern came before the interval when Ugarte went down while chasing Spain playmaker Pedri.
The 25-year-old, who joined the Red Devils two years ago, immediately appeared in discomfort, clutching his knee before medical staff rushed onto the pitch.
After receiving lengthy treatment, Ugarte was unable to continue and was carried from the field on a stretcher.
The Uruguay international covered his face and was visibly emotional as he left the pitch in tears, raising fears that the injury could be serious.
The incident comes at an awkward time for Manchester United, who are planning a major overhaul of their midfield before the transfer window closes.
United have already moved quickly to strengthen the department by wrapping up a deal for Ederson.
The Red Devils also remain interested in Matheus Fernandes despite fierce competition.
From United’s perspective, the hope will be that Ugarte’s injury is not as serious as first feared.
He is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer as Carrick looks to refresh his options in the centre of the park. His departure would help finance arrivals.
A lengthy spell on the sidelines complicates those plans.
Potential buyers will not commit to buy a player recovering from a serious knee injury, leaving United with fewer opportunities to raise funds in an already inflated transfer market.
The Red Devils have ambitious plans, but balancing the books remains just as important.
They will now anxiously await the results of Ugarte’s medical assessments, hoping it is no more than a scare.
