As Manchester United prepare for a pivotal summer rebuild under Ruben Amorim, the name Bryan Mbeumo has emerged as a top target — and according to Mike McGrath of The Telegraph, the interest is both serious and strategic.
The Brentford forward, valued at around £60 million, is expected to be one of the most sought-after attacking players in the coming transfer window. McGrath reports that “Mbeumo…is understood to be high on the list of United’s potential targets to bolster Ruben Amorim’s squad.” That comes as no surprise given the Cameroonian international’s electric form, scoring 18 goals this season and proving his value once again to Thomas Frank’s side.
With Mbeumo facing United this weekend at the Gtech Community Stadium, the timing is perfect for scouts and decision-makers to get another close look at a player already proving he can perform at the highest level.
United’s pursuit of Mbeumo fits into a wider strategic reshaping of the forward line. The departures of Marcus Rashford and Antony — both out on loan — signalled the beginning of Amorim’s rebuild. While some viewed those moves as short-sighted, the Portuguese coach has made it clear he’s thinking long-term.
McGrath noted, “Amorim…admitted it was a risk to allow Marcus Rashford and Antony to leave in the January window but their departures were for the good of the team, with the inference that he is planning long-term without them.” That long-term vision appears to include a switch to more versatile, direct attackers — and Mbeumo fits the bill.
In terms of player profile, Mbeumo offers something different. His blend of pace, movement, and directness out wide has made him one of the Premier League’s most consistent wide men. Whether cutting inside to score or stretching defences to create space, his presence would offer Amorim the kind of tactical flexibility he demands.

Of course, any major signing must be viewed through the lens of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. United have operated with caution in recent windows, and McGrath made clear that the club “have been mindful of Premier League profit and sustainability rules after making losses over the last five years.”
However, there is potential for incoming funds. Rashford and Antony, whose form has revived during their respective loan spells at Aston Villa and Real Betis, may yet fetch respectable transfer fees. As McGrath stated, “they could raise money from sales with Rashford and Antony increasing their market value.”
That cash injection could be key to unlocking not just Mbeumo’s deal but potentially others as well — with Wolves striker Matheus Cunha also named as a target. While Cunha operates primarily as a central striker, Mbeumo offers quality out wide, and crucially, United’s interest in both players is said to be “independent.”
Brentford are no strangers to selling star players for big profit. After moving Ivan Toney to Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia last summer, the Bees are expected to consider offers for Mbeumo — especially if they meet their valuation.
Thomas Frank, never one to hide from hard truths, acknowledged the reality earlier this season: “If the price is right – and that’s going to be expensive – is coming, then I’m sure the club will be open to it,” he told Sky Sports. He continued, “We are a selling club… but at the same time we have to reinforce that there are 10 clubs in the world who aren’t selling clubs.”
That pragmatism may work in United’s favour, but with competition from Newcastle and historic interest from Liverpool, a bidding war could push Mbeumo’s fee even higher.
Still, for a player who cost just £5.8 million in 2019 and has helped take Brentford from the Championship to a solid Premier League outfit, Mbeumo represents outstanding value and potential for United’s next chapter under Amorim.
