Manchester United are reportedly prepared to make a major compromise to land Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
United’s midfield overhaul is proving to be a far more difficult challenge than was anticipated in these early stages of the summer transfer window.
Michael Carrick’s side have now turned their attention to other targets after striking an agreement with Atalanta for Ederson. The Brazilian is set to officially complete his switch to Old Trafford after the ongoing World Cup.
United had identified Mateus Fernandes as a top target but the deal appears to be hanging on by a thread, largely thanks to the threat posed by Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur. West Ham are demanding £85m to sanction the player’s exit. Needless to say, United have no desire to fork out such a sum for a player who was part of a relegated team.
Tottenham are said to be growing in confidence that they can beat United to Fernandes’ signature. The North London outfit are prepared to offer him far more lucrative wages to lure him to their ranks.
But for all the talk about Fernandes, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Tchouameni is United’s “dream target.” A big-money move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez is on Jose Mourinho’s agenda, but to make it happen, he will likely have to offload one of his current midfield stars.
The Athletic recently revealed that Eduardo Camavinga has made it clear that he will not leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer. Consequently, Madrid are looking to offload Tchoaumeni.
Now, Ben Jacobs has revealed that United, despite their agenda to reduce the wage bill, are prepared to make Tchouameni one of their highest earners.
Appearing on The United Stand, Jacobs said, “Tchouameni’s wage is not an issue, in my opinion.”
“Man United would be prepared to make a player like that one of their top earners. They’re not in the territory of £300k, and Rashford and Sancho-type wages…”
“I’m not aware that personal terms for Tchouameni would be a problem. The challenge in that is, what midfielders doe Real [Madrid] sign? Is it in Tchouameni’s position? And even if it isn’t in Tchouameni’s position, do they bring in enough funds elsewhere or do they need one big sale to make a player like Enzo Fernandez.”
Jacobs added, “I doubt Man United would be walking away from a Tchouameni deal on wages. I think they would hold some optimism that if the player genuinely becomes available, it’s a viable move.”
The Tchouameni scenario merits close attention. The outcome is likely to hinge on the player’s personal preference, specifically whether he signals a desire to move or commits his future to the Spanish capital.
